On Hail Storms, dust devils and the "fraying" of the edges...

I love dust devils. You spot them in the distance and they churn along until they just disappear. Look them up on Wikipedia for cool pictures (even of ones viewed by NASA on Mars!). Shelly and I have spotted at least 10 over the last two days. Strangely no pictures (we were focusing on catching them on video - with limited success).

This is the hail storm with powerful wind gusts that we hit going 80 mph. The rain was sideways (coming in from the south) and it seemed for a second to be almost "tornadic" as it fiercely pushed the van around. It was fascinating to watch it come up from the right side of the van (the rain and dust swirling in the winds until it engulfed us). Very dramatic moments...

It was the first rain we have seen since Wyoming (the mist in the mountain clouds heading toward Devil's Tower - also where we lost our hubcap).

Shelly wanted to get a picture of the tumbleweeds that the strong winds were pushing up the road. We are through the storm now but the outflow winds in front of the storm were pushing the van from behind.

Close up on the tumbleweed. It is less than impressive until you realize it was blowing at least 40 mph along the road. The temperature dropped from 99 to 64 and then back up to 95 all in less than 20 minutes.

Must concentrate on road...

Haven't seen any so far.

So it always seems to start small.
Emma: "Jacob, why did you do that??? (in a loud, annoyed voice - the "what"... undetermined). The boys laugh at her or maybe something else... "Momma, the boys are being mean again." "Boys, stop laughing at your sister" "But I didn't do that, I was laughing at my video game." "I hate her, she is always getting me in trouble." "Momma, Malcolm is still saying mean things." "Emma mind your own business, Malcolm stop talking to her. Jacob stop laughing at your sister." "Well she is acting like a baby." "Jacob is still being mean." "Alright, everyone stop talking." "I don't know why you are yelling at me." "Boys you're being the bad one's today!" "Just shut up Emma..." More comments from the boys... Emma: "why is everyone being mean to me?" Shelly: "The next person who calls a name or tells someone to shut up they will lose video game privileges." "Me? What did I do? I'm being good." "Everyone, means everyone." "Well good for you."
Tears, sometimes screaming, often yelling...
and then (usually) it's gone...
like a dust devil.

Oh, and did I mention, we made it to the Grand Canyon.

More pictures tomorrow... if there is a tomorrow!!!
